Maintaining your generator is crucial to ensuring its longevity and reliability. Follow these steps to perform a routine oil check and ensure your generator is in top condition.
Step 1: Turn Off Your A/C Units
Begin by turning off all your A/C units at the thermostat. This will reduce the load on your generator when you turn it back on.
Step 2: Turn Off the Main Breaker at the Generator
Turn off the main breaker at the generator. This action will cut the power to your house. It's essential to do this before proceeding with any maintenance to avoid electrical hazards.
Step 3: Cool Down the Generator
After turning off the main breaker, let the generator run for 20-30 minutes to cool down. This period allows the engine to stabilize and prepares it for a safe shutdown.
Step 4: Turn Off the Generator at the Control Board
Turn off the generator using the red "OFF" button on the control board. This step will completely shut down the generator, making it safe to perform maintenance.
Step 5: Let the Generator Cool Further
Allow the generator to cool for an additional 5 minutes. This cooling period helps the oil drain back into the bottom of the engine block, ensuring an accurate oil level reading.
Step 6: Check the Oil Level
Locate the oil dipstick, which has a yellow or orange handle. Use a rag or towel to clean the dipstick, removing any oil residue. Re-insert the dipstick completely, then pull it out again to check the oil level on the cross-hatch area. If the oil level is at the bottom or not visible, you'll need to add more oil.
Step 7: Add Oil as Needed
Use 5W-20 synthetic oil to refill the generator. Add small quantities of oil at a time, as the generator holds a total of 2 quarts. Never add a whole quart at once. After each addition, clean the dipstick and check the oil level. Continue this process until the oil reaches the top of the cross-hatch area on the dipstick. Once the oil level is correct, your generator is ready for another 8 hours of run time.
Step 8: Secure the Oil Fill Cap and Dipstick
After ensuring the oil level is correct, replace the cap on the oil fill location and make sure the dipstick is re-inserted properly.
Step 9: Turn the Generator Back On
Turn the generator back on using the control board. Press the green "AUTO" button to restart the generator.
Step 10: Ensure A/C Units Are Off
Before turning the power back on, make sure all your A/C units are still off at the thermostat.
Step 11: Turn the Main Breaker Back On
Turn the main breaker at the generator back to the "ON" position to restore power to your house.
Step 12: Turn On A/C Units One at a Time
Gradually turn your A/C units back on, one at a time. This step helps manage the load on your generator and prevents overloading.
It's essential to check the oil every 8 hours of runtime. During the night, it's generally safe to run the generator continuously until morning. However, always ensure the oil level is sufficient to avoid engine damage.
